Issues and Protests in North Cornwall

The coast between Trethevy and Trevalga is undergoing a transformation, for betwixt the two hamlets a major sewage pumping station is being constructed regardless of the fact that local opposition was and still is very strong. Here's the rub. No one in Trevalga uses mains water or sewage,  the water comes from the estate and the sewage is dealt with by septic tanks. The sewage site is bang opposite a lay-by that affords stunning coastal views and has also now applied for double the noise limit originally requested, and local residents in Trethevy have been affected by business closure due to this.

A MESSAGE TO THE PEOPLE OF BOSCASTLE

FROM T.A.T.A.S. ACTION GROUP

(TREVALGA AND TRETHEVY AGAINST SEWAGE)

WE WISH TO INFORM YOU THAT SOUTH WEST WATER HAVE SUBMITTED PLANNING
PROPOSALS TO BUILD A JOINT SEWAGE TREATMENT WORKS FOR BOSCASTLE AND
TINTAGE/BOSSINEY TO BE SITED AT EITHER TREVALGA OR FENTERLEIGH.
SHOULD EITHER OF THESE PROPOSALS BE PASSED BY THE PLANNERS THE
INSTALLATION OF PIPEWORK AND PUMPING STATIONS WILL PLUNGE BOSCASTLE
BACK INTO A STATE OF CHAOS - MAKE NO MISTAKE, THIS WILL BE A MAJOR
CONSTRUCTION PROGRAMME, ALMOST CERTAINLY INVOLVING ROAD CLOSURES FOR
EXTENDED PERIODS.
SO, THE LONG SUFFERING PEOPLE OF BOSCASTLE WILL BE SUBJECTED TO MORE
NOISE AND DISRUPTION FOR MANY MONTHS (OUR INFORMATION IS THAT THE WORK
WILL TAKE AT LEAST 12 MONTHS)
BUT THIS NEED NOT HAPPEN. WE MUST LET THE PLANNERS AND OUR ELECTED
REPRESENTATIVES KNOW THAT THE COMMUNITIES DO NOT WANT THIS, AND THAT
TWO SEPARATE, SMALLER TREATMENT WORKS, SITED WITHIN THE BOUNDARIES OF
BOSCASTLE AND TINTAGEL PARISHES RESPECTIVELY, WOULD BE A MUCH BETTER
SOLUTION
DURING THE WORK CARRIED OUT SINCE THE FLOOD, PIPEWORK WAS LAID ON
PENALLY HILL IN ORDER TO PUMP EFFLUENT TO A COMPARATIVELY SMALL SEWAGE
TREATMENT WORKS, SITUATED JUST OFF THE BUDS ROAD.
IT NOW SEEMS THAT THIS WAS ALL A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY, AS SOUTH WEST
WATER NOW WISH TO INSTALL PIPES AND PUMPING STATIONS FROM THE HARBOUR
AREA, UP THE OLD ROAD, ACROSS TO THE NEW ROAD AND THEN UP THROUGH
FORRABURY TO THE FOOTBALL FIELD, AND THEN TOWARDS WELLTOWN AND
TREVALGA.
IF YOU WANT TO PUT A STOP TO THIS RIDICULOUS PROPOSAL, YOU MUST REGISTER
YOUR OBJECTIONS WITH CORNWALL COUNTY COUNCIL ONCE THE PLANNING
APPLICATIONS HAVE BEEN GIVEN NUMBERS - WHICH WILL BE PUBLISHED IN THE
NEWSPAPERS - AFTER WHICH TIME THERE WILL ONLY BE 21 DAYS IN WHICH TO
REGISTER ANY OBJECTIONS - WHICH WE URGE YOU TO DO - OTHERWISE BOSCASTLE
COULD BE PLUNGED BACK INTO MORE MAJOR DISRUPTION.
(IF YOU WISH TO LOBBY MEMBERS OF THE PLANNING COMMITTEE, THEIR CONTACT DETAILS CAN BE
OBTAINED FROM CORNWALL COUNTY COUNCIL'S WEBSITE)

If you live in the locality of Boscastle and Tintagel you will no doubt be aware of the sewage treatment issues that are currently ongoing, but when I was told what the proposed solution put forward by South West Water was, I found it difficult to believe. The idea is to build two pipelines, one from Tintagel, and one from Boscastle and then pump all the sewage from theses villages to the hamlet of Trevalga, were a large treatment facility would be constructed right along the main road opposite the lay-by at Trevalga, to deal with the waste...... This would mean many months of interruption to locals at Boscastle who have only just seen the last of the repair works completed after four years of turmoil and lost business courtesy of the flooding, and Tintagel, which as had regeneration work done will suffer similar.
